Rabobank senior analyst Gorjan Nikolik told a Fish-Free Feed Challenge audience that fishmeal prices are likely to show softness over the next two years despite tight long-run supply. He cited a recovery in Peruvian anchovy supply after El Niño-depressed years and projected near-term prices of $1,200-1,700 per ton.
Fishmeal was reported at $1,500-1,550 per metric ton and fish oil at $1,700-1,800 per ton.
Rising Peruvian anchovy output and higher quotas should add fishmeal supply, pressuring fishmeal prices lower and easing protein costs for feed buyers. Fishmeal substitutes such as soybean meal may face relatively firmer competition for inclusion if fishmeal softens.
