Scottish spring malting barley is expected to be in demand for 2017 after the 2016 Scottish cereal crop fell by 327,000 tonnes. Malt premiums over feed barley could reach £40 per tonne, up from £28 in 2016, on the back of a whisky market recovery.
A smaller crop and stronger distilling demand support malting barley prices relative to feed barley, which keeps feed barley values from falling as far as they otherwise would.
