Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in poultry in 15 countries in the past week, including France, Greece, Croatia, Ukraine and Russia reporting first commercial cases. France has been hit hardest, with 34 new outbreaks in the past week and a national total of 145 H5N8 outbreaks.
Outbreaks in Uganda, Nigeria, Egypt, India, Japan and Taiwan were also reported.
Disease spread across three continents, with nearly 250,000 birds dead or destroyed in France alone, lowers poultry output and feed demand and raises the risk of export restrictions on poultry products.
