USDA confirmed H5N2 in a wild mallard in Montana on January 9, 2017, and experts say the US could see more poultry outbreaks this year. APHIS has sampled 75,000 wild birds since the 2015 outbreak that led to 43 million birds being culled.
The agency has also streamlined its response and trained case managers.
Stronger US preparedness lowers the likelihood of a repeat of the 2015 mass culling, which would otherwise cut poultry supply and feed demand, so the near-term price effect is limited.
