The EIA says the US is expected to become a net natural gas exporter by 2018 under its AEO2017 Reference case. LNG exports are projected to surpass pipeline exports by 2020, with five facilities providing about 9.2 Bcf/d of capacity by 2021.
US pipeline exports to Mexico have also doubled since 2009.
Growing export demand ties US gas more closely to global prices and reduces the domestic surplus that has kept prices low. This supports firmer US gas prices over the medium term.
