A University of Manitoba professor said canola meal can be included in nursery pig diets at higher levels than previously believed, with inclusions of up to 25 percent possible when diets are properly formulated. He cited improved canola varieties and processing that have reduced antinutritional factors.
The comments were made at the 2017 Manitoba Swine Seminar.
If higher inclusion rates become accepted, feed formulators could use more canola meal, potentially widening demand for meal relative to other protein sources. The effect on prices would be gradual and depends on industry adoption.
