Sorghum crops in the Gunnedah area are suffering from extreme summer heat and limited moisture, with yields around half of normal. The planted area is down by roughly 50 per cent in the local area as cotton has taken up land, and some sorghum is of lower quality.
A sharply smaller planted area and halved yields reduce regional sorghum supply, supporting prices for feed buyers while cotton expansion shifts acreage away from grain.
