Cargill announced the closure of its Hull rapeseed crushing plant in December 2022, removing 200,000 to 250,000 tonnes of UK crush capacity and affecting 36 jobs. The UK's remaining crush plants are at Liverpool, Erith and Warwickshire.
The UK expects about 1.3 million tonnes of rapeseed this year and will need to import roughly 700,000 tonnes.
Lower UK crush capacity raises reliance on imported rapeseed and reduces domestic rapemeal output, tightening UK meal supply and supporting imported meal prices.
