The St. Louis Regional Freightway and the three St. Louis-area public ports signed a memorandum of understanding with the Port of New Orleans on February 23, 2017. The agreement sets up joint marketing and the exchange of operational information, and it supports container-on-barge shipping on the lower Mississippi.
The deal could expand container-on-barge capacity out of St. Louis, which may shift some containerized grain and feed trade toward river routes. Its effect on commodity prices is minor.
