Highly pathogenic avian influenza has hurt poultry markets in Russia and Ukraine. Russia's largest turkey producer, Eurodon, halted chilled turkey deliveries to retailers from 6 April for about two months after culling 6% of its flock.
The company estimates losses of about US$30 million, and officials warn of further outbreaks.
A turkey supply gap during the seasonal spring demand peak in Russia tightens poultry supply and supports prices for substitute meats. Further outbreaks could extend the shortage.
