Canadian producers are cutting malt barley plantings for 2017 because of fears that weather will downgrade quality to feed grade, which is already priced very low. Trade estimates for Statistics Canada acreage ranged from 4.4 to 6.4 million acres, against 6.4 million seeded the previous year.
Lower malt barley acres point to tighter malting supply later, but ample feed barley and heavy Australian exports keep feed barley prices weak.
