Northern Ireland achieved BSE negligible-risk status, reducing the volume of beef carcase material classed as Specified Risk Material that must be rendered. Estimated disposal savings are about £1.2m per year, and farmers may eventually see lower kill charges.
More carcase material can be used as animal by-product, including in pet food, which could modestly add supply to meat and bone meal while easing processor costs.
