Statistics Canada's planting intentions put Canadian sunflower area at 50,000 acres for 2017, down from 70,000 the prior year and the second-lowest in 40 years. The industry believes actual acreage may be 5,000 to 10,000 acres higher, and confectionery contract prices are up on the year.
Smaller Canadian sunflower area tightens local seed supply, but the crop is small enough that the effect on global sunflower meal and oil prices is limited.
