EUMOFA data show Chilean fishmeal and fish oil output fell from about 800,000 tonnes in 2006 to an estimated 230,000 tonnes in 2016. The decline reflects El Niño-related closures of anchovy and sardine fisheries and reduced horse mackerel quotas.
Chile's shrinking fishmeal output tightens global supply, which supports fishmeal prices for feed buyers. The structural decline adds to the market's reliance on Peru.
