USDA analysts expect world barley stocks for 2017/18 to reach 17.5 million tonnes, 19% below the current-season estimate and the lowest in about 30 years. Global barley area is projected to fall by 960,000 ha to 47.2 million ha, the lowest since 1960.
A sharp drop in world barley stocks and planted area tightens supply for feed and malting buyers and points to higher barley prices. Lower area also reflects farmers shifting away from barley.
