Bulgarian barley acreage available for harvest was 129,768 ha as of May 18, 2017, down 20.4% from the previous season. Barley exports from the 2016-17 harvest reached 373,796 mt by May 26, and exports via Varna in the period were 88.3% below a year earlier.
Smaller plantings and slower exports point to tighter Bulgarian supplies that will be absorbed by local demand, which supports firm barley prices in the Black Sea region. Export sales remain sluggish, which limits upside for world barley values.
