Live cattle exporters in northern Australia have been competing hard for a limited supply of cattle, pushing the liveweight price from Darwin up 25c/kg to $3.45/kg in late April. Some sales for Indonesia and Vietnam were made at a loss of 2 to 3 percent.
The supply shortage was caused by a long, wet northern season and reduced flows from Queensland.
Tight northern Australian cattle supply and higher live export prices reflect strong import demand from Asia. This is a regional market story with little direct effect on U.S. cattle or feed prices.
