Evonik and DSM will build a commercial omega-3 production plant in Blair, Nebraska, with about $200 million of investment. The facility is expected to start in 2019 and will make algae-based EPA and DHA for animal nutrition, initially for salmon aquaculture and pet food.
Algae-derived omega-3 can replace wild fish oil in aquafeeds, which may gradually reduce demand for fishmeal and fish oil. The effect is long-term and small relative to current supply.
