The global potash market is recovering from a decade of weak prices as cheap fertilizer drives sales in India and China. Potash Corp raised its 2017 global shipment forecast to 62-65 million tonnes, and Canpotex said shipments to China may rise 31% this year.
Canpotex also signed Chinese supply contracts priced $11 a tonne above 2016 levels.
Stronger shipment forecasts and higher contract prices point to firmer potash demand and prices, which raises input costs for crop producers and feed-grain margins.
