Crop progress for the week ending July 31, 2017 showed 91% of Minnesota's sunflower crop in good to excellent condition and 66% of Kansas's rated good to excellent. Blooming was ahead of last year in North Dakota and South Dakota, and Texas harvest had begun.
A proposed $250,000 appropriation would fund aircraft to repel blackbirds from sunflower fields.
Crop condition ratings in the Northern Plains are weak in North Dakota and South Dakota, which points to a smaller US sunflower crop and firmer meal and oil supply. The blackbird funding is a minor cost-side item.
