The Panama Canal expansion marked its first anniversary on June 26, 2017, with five NeoPanamax vessels transiting the new locks that day. Canal Administrator Jorge Quijano said three ships of more than 13,000 TEUs had transited in the past five weeks, earlier than expected.
He called the transits evidence of shipping industry confidence in the expanded canal.
A larger canal lowers shipping costs and expands capacity for US-Asia container and bulk trade, which can ease freight costs for exporters. The effect on feed grain prices is modest.
