Live cattle futures gained about $4.90 to $4.93 for the week ending May 17, with August closing at $179.05, the highest since late March. Southern cash cattle traded mostly at $186 and dressed northern cattle near $300, both about $2 to $5 higher than the prior week.
Seasonal boxed beef demand lifted cash and futures prices, with the August contract breaking out of its trading range. Stronger cash prices support continued futures gains.
