Chicken prices fell and supply was cut in some Philippine markets after avian flu killed about 37,000 fowl in Pampanga. Supermarkets cut chicken supply by up to 40 percent, and wet-market sales dropped as buyers avoided chicken.
A state of calamity was declared and about 200,000 birds were culled.
Lower domestic chicken demand and reduced retail supply are pushing local prices down, while culling and quarantine limit production. Feed buyers in the Philippines may see weaker poultry demand for feed until flocks recover.
