Cash hog prices have fallen sharply over the past several weeks as seasonally higher hog numbers arrive and pork belly values drop. The USDA belly primal fell about 40 percent in four weeks to $128/cwt, and the pork cutout lost $15/cwt in a month, most of it from bellies.
Heavier seasonal hog supply plus weaker bellies pressures lean hog futures and cash hog prices, and feed buyers should expect soft hog margins to persist into September and October.
