Northern Ireland's rendering sector is proposing a single outlet for fallen stock after NI beef achieved negligible BSE risk status, endorsed by the EU. The status change sharply reduces the volume of category one material that must be rendered, from 40-50kg per animal toward 13-14kg.
Less category one material means lower volumes for rendering plants, which reduces meat and bone meal and tallow output and could leave NI short of rendering capacity if disease strikes. Lower MBM supply is mildly supportive for alternative protein meals.
