Hot, dry conditions in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta have cut yields and raised protein in Western Canadian cereals, including malting barley. The Canadian barley crop is forecast at 7.4Mt, down 15% from 2016, and the USDA projects US barley output at 3.1Mt, down from 4.3Mt last year.
Smaller North American barley crops reduce exportable supply and support barley prices. Buyers may need to source from the Black Sea or Europe.
