Scottish harvest was 55% complete by late September, ahead of 2016 but slowed by repeated wet weather. Barley nitrogen levels averaged 1.59%, above the 1.49% of 2016, and the eastern region reached 1.71%, so much of the crop may miss malting and distilling specifications.
Higher barley nitrogen can push malting-quality barley into feed channels, which increases feed barley availability but lifts the premium for qualifying malting lots.
