Michigan's dry summer and record late-September heat have left soybeans drier than optimal and pushed harvest up by one to two weeks. Nearly 30% of the state was abnormally dry and 3% was in moderate drought by the end of September.
Some dairy cows were also affected by the dry conditions.
Early, dry-harvested soybeans may carry shrink and quality discounts, and drought stress on pasture and cattle could support feed demand. The effect on national prices is limited because Michigan is a small producer.
