The European Parliament backed a European Commission proposal capping cadmium in fertilizers at 20 mg/kg, phased in from an initial 60 mg/kg. Rock phosphate sources such as Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia are affected.
Chatham Rise rock, which has low cadmium, could gain marketability.
Rock sourced from high-cadmium African deposits faces tighter EU access, which may reduce supply options for European phosphate producers and lift costs for phosphate fertilizers.
