Bird flu has wiped out more than 15% of South Africa's layer hens, with over four million chickens culled or being culled and at least 23 commercial farms affected. Egg prices could rise 15-20%, and importing eggs is being considered but is costly.
The loss of layer hens cuts domestic egg supply, supporting higher table egg and chicken prices. Reduced layer numbers also lower feed demand from the affected flocks over the coming months.
