The Canola Council of Canada urged the federal government to advance Trans-Pacific Partnership implementation at a meeting of the 11 remaining member countries in Da Nang, Vietnam, from November 6 to 11. The council says tariff elimination in Japan and Vietnam over five years could raise Canadian canola oil and meal exports by up to $780 million per year.
Lower tariffs on canola oil and meal in Japan and Vietnam would shift demand toward Canadian value-added products and away from U.S. soybean oil. This is a longer-term support for canola meal and oil demand.
