A joint EFSA, ECDC and EURL quarterly report covers avian influenza from October 2016 to August 2017. It describes the A(H5N8) highly pathogenic epidemic, which hit 29 European countries and was the largest ever recorded in the EU by poultry outbreaks, geographic spread and dead wild birds.
Heavy poultry losses and control measures reduce European poultry supply and can restrict trade, supporting chicken and feed-ingredient demand in import markets. The report confirms ongoing risk but no new shock.
