U.S. barge freight rates rose to new highs as low water on the Mississippi River hindered navigation and caused several vessel groundings over the weekend, according to traders and barge brokers. The Mississippi and its tributaries carry about 60 percent of U.S. corn, soybean and wheat exports that leave via the Gulf Coast.
Higher barge freight raises the cost of moving Midwest grain to Gulf export terminals, which widens the gap between inland and export prices and can weigh on farm-gate bids for corn and soybeans.
