Bank Indonesia reported foreign exchange reserves fell by US$2.9 billion to US$126.5 billion at the end of October 2017. The decline reflected government external debt payments and central bank intervention to stabilize the rupiah, which had slid from around 13,300 to above 13,500 per dollar since late September.
Reserve drawdowns from currency defense signal persistent rupiah pressure, which keeps imported feed raw material costs elevated for Indonesian buyers.
