Purdue economist Jim Mintert said Iowa State data show cattle feeders lost heavily in 2015 and 2016 but earned positive returns in the first nine months of 2017. Yearling feeding returns averaged $198 per head and calf returns $191, with May 2017 calf returns a record since 1981.
Improved feeding margins support continued demand for feeder cattle and encourage feedlots to keep placing animals, which supports cattle prices.
