Guangdong Wen's Foodstuff Group reported a 63% drop in profits for the first nine months of the year, blaming the H7N9 bird flu outbreak, which hit hardest in the first half. The company switched to a new broiler breed and expanded chilled poultry meat sales, while authorities closed live bird markets across China.
Researchers also reported that the H7N9 virus has mutated to spread more easily among animals.
Live bird market closures and weaker consumer demand for poultry shift Chinese chicken demand away from traditional channels, which weighs on poultry prices and feed demand. Continued outbreaks could keep Chinese poultry margins under pressure.
