US researchers at Texas A&M have developed a gossypol-free cottonseed variety. Gossypol is a toxin that limits the use of cottonseed meal in poultry and other non-ruminant diets, so the new variety could make cottonseed a usable protein source for these animals.
If the variety reaches commercial use, cottonseed meal could compete more widely with soybean meal in non-ruminant rations, though the effect on prices is still years away.
