South Korean officials said the H5N6 virus found in a Gochang outbreak is a new reassortant between H5N8 and a low-pathogenic H3N6 virus, not the strain behind last winter's outbreaks. Japan reported more H5N6 in wild birds, and Italy and Russia reported more H5N8 events.
The finding indicates new virus lineages circulating through migratory birds, raising the likelihood of recurring poultry outbreaks across the region and sustaining supply risk for chicken production.
