A fire at BASF's Ludwigshafen, Germany plant has halted production of vitamins A and E and red pigments, and it is not expected to restart until April at the earliest. China has also cut its vitamin A and E output to reduce emissions, and UK feed makers report vitamin A prices rising from €20 to €350 per kilo.
BASF supplied about half of the world's vitamin A and E, so the shortfall tightens supply and pushes up poultry feed costs in the short term. Feed buyers should expect higher premix and vitamin costs through early 2018.
