A USDA Economic Research Service report found that more than 50 million US chickens and turkeys died or were culled during the December 2014 to June 2015 HPAI outbreak. The birds made up about 12 percent of table-egg layers and 8 percent of turkeys grown for meat.
This is a historical account of the 2014-2015 outbreak, so it does not change current supply. It is a useful benchmark for estimating the supply impact of a future bird flu outbreak.
