A USDA Economic Research Service report on the 2014-2015 HPAI outbreak concluded that export market closures hurt the US poultry sector more than the disease itself. Broiler prices stayed at multiyear lows in 2016 partly because of lingering export weakness.
The findings show that trade restrictions can depress poultry prices longer than the outbreak itself, which is relevant to how buyers assess future bird flu risk. The report is retrospective and does not change current supply.
