The EPA signed a proposed rule on Dec. 19 that would allow distillers sorghum oil recovered at dry-mill ethanol plants to qualify as a biofuel feedstock for advanced biofuels and biomass-based diesel.
The change follows a petition from the National Sorghum Producers. EPA estimates the oil could yield 12 million to 21 million ethanol-equivalent gallons per year.
A new qualifying feedstock pathway creates an added biofuel outlet for grain sorghum processed at ethanol plants, which supports sorghum demand. The volumes are small, so the price effect is limited for now.
