Seed World reports that DuPont Pioneer and the United Sorghum Checkoff Program found two sorghum haploid inducer lines after screening more than 4,000 hybrids. The discovery could let breeders create finished parental lines in a single step, cutting development time.
Commercial hybrids could follow in a few years.
Faster sorghum breeding could eventually increase hybrid choice and yield potential, which affects long-run supply. The effect on near-term prices is negligible.
