Rep. Jodey Arrington's office reports that the EPA issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on December 19 covering lifecycle emissions for biofuels made from grain sorghum oil at dry mill ethanol plants.
The EPA found that sorghum oil biofuels meet the 50 percent greenhouse gas reduction threshold for advanced biofuels. Public comment is now open.
Qualifying as an advanced biofuel gives sorghum oil access to RFS credit demand, which would support sorghum ethanol margins and sorghum prices. The rule is still a proposal, so the outcome could change after comments.
