A University of Saskatchewan poultry veterinarian investigated underweight 7-day-old chicks and found that excess lysine hydrochloride in the feed reduced body weight, weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion. Trial birds given lysine supplements raised by 2, 4, 6 and 8% showed these declines, and video suggested reduced palatability.
Excess lysine can cut feed intake and performance, so feed formulators may tighten inclusion rates and dosing controls, which could slightly reduce near-term lysine demand. The effect on feed-grain prices is minor.
