Australian sunflower plantings are well down in key eastern growing regions this summer, with only a few paddocks in places like the Darling Downs. Growers are switching to mungbeans, cotton and sorghum because sunflower gross margins trail those crops.
Smaller sunflower acreage reduces local oilseed and meal supply, but the volumes are small in the global market. The shift toward sorghum and cotton has little effect on feed grain prices.
