A USDA Economic Research Service study put the trade losses from the 2014/15 high pathogenic avian influenza outbreak at £1.3bn, with more than 50 million birds lost. It found egg and turkey prices rose on lower supply while broiler producers faced lower prices due to foreign trade restrictions.
Lower layer and turkey supply raised those prices, while export restrictions on broilers weighed on that sector's prices. This is a retrospective cost study, so it has limited direct price impact today.
