Ice accumulations on the Mississippi, Illinois and Ohio rivers have cut grain barge tonnage 63% below last year for the first two weeks of January. Barge companies have suspended operations on parts of the Illinois and Ohio, and flotillas are being reduced from 15 barges to 6 to 9 because of narrower channels.
Smaller flotillas and suspended runs cut waterborne capacity by roughly 40 to 60% on affected routes, raising freight costs and slowing export loadings. This supports barge freight rates while weakening interior basis.
