The USDA Grain Transportation Report for the week ending January 20 showed downbound grain shipments at Ohio River Locks and Dam 52 rising 138% to 378 thousand tons as water levels recovered. Ice at Locks 27 on the Mississippi cut tonnage there by 47%, though tow restrictions were lifted on January 20 and conditions were improving.
Recovering barge tonnage eases the transport bottleneck that had been widening Gulf export basis, which modestly supports cash bids. The effect is limited while ice and low water still constrain some river segments.
