A Compeer Financial analyst says US pork producers have received better cash markets over two months, with packer margins falling by about $26 per head. Pork production grew 7.3% in 2015, 1.8% in 2016 and 2.6% in 2017, and the breeding herd is expected to keep expanding.
Growing pork supply means higher feed demand from the hog sector over the next year or two. Strong demand and tight packer margins are supporting hog prices, though herd growth could cap gains later.
